How to compete online with Amazon

Over 75% of the US population has a smartphone and consumers are using them every day to make buying decisions. Let’s begin by looking at:

The Amazon way…

Let’s think about why Amazon is so compelling from a consumer perspective. Imagine we are in New York and we want to buy a Jenga Classic Game, we pull out our smart phone and we type into Google “jenga classic new york”, here is what we get:

  1. Amazon is running a Google
  2. Amazon delivers the product information:Screen Shot 2018-05-28 at 14.33.01.png
  3. Amazon makes it really, really easy to purchase:Screen Shot 2018-05-28 at 14.36.46

The reason that Amazon is doing so well is that they are visible when the consumer is searching online with intent to buy and they make it really, really easy to purchase.

How Brick & Mortar Stores can compete

If we look back at the Google search, you will see Greenpoint Toy Center on Manhattan Avenue.  They have appeared because they list their products online using Pointy.  This gives the consumer a local buying alternative, let’s have a look at how that works:

  1. Greenpoint Toy Center appears in the Google
  2. Greenpoint Toy Center displays the product information and makes it really, really easy to get directions and/or call the storeScreen Shot 2018-05-28 at 15.43.21

The beauty of this is that at the moment the consumer is searching online, with the intent to buy, Greenpoint Toy Center (a local store) is appearing next to Amazon. This gives the consumer the option to go and buy the product from a local store, which may be the preferred choice.
