Today is International Firefighters’ Day and we would like to recognize the men and women of the Exeter Fire Department and our fellow firefighters around the world for their service and sacrifice. Thank you for your commitment to protecting our citizens and our communities.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month so we reviewed our mental health-related calls so far this year. Between Jan. and April, officers handled 122 calls involving a mental health issue. That’s up from 80 during the same period in 2023. If you’re struggling, help is available.

Members of A-shift spent some time training for scenarios in which a firefighter becomes low on air in a smoke-filled room and needs potentially life-saving assistance. The training gave the crew an opportunity to use the universal buddy breathing system and other techniques.

We’ve been reviewing some of the data collected from the new electronic radar speed sign that was placed on Front Street and so far the results are encouraging. Since the sign was installed in late January, vehicles have been traveling an average of 28 mph in a 25 mph zone.

The Exeter Fire Department has a new chief at the helm, but he needs no introduction. Assistant Chief Justin Pizon was promoted to chief and was publicly sworn in at tonight’s Select Board meeting with family and members of the department on hand. Congratulations, Chief Pizon! 👏
